Hi,

Welcome to dance!  I am happy that you are visiting this webpage.  Dance is in its second year at Thomas Jefferson and we have added a class due to popularity!  Students are getting into the daily groove of warming up their bodies and then engaging in the art form.

My name is Deborah Mata and I teach 6th and 7th periods.  I've taught in the Vancouver School District for 18 years both in the elementary arts program and also at VSAA for seven years.

Dance is my passion and I'm thrilled to be sharing it with Thomas Jefferson students.  You can always reach me by email at:     dmata@vansd.org

I am available everyday after school from 3:30-4:30.

Famous Quote

"Everything in the universe has rhythm.  Everything dances."

Whats happening in class......

Students will start the year addressing the Learning Target:  "Musicality."   Dancers, regardless of the style of dance, must be able to understand the music they are dancing to.

Music and Dance are very related to each other.  Musicians and dancers must be able to demonstrate:  steady beat, rhythm, tempo, accent, rest, syncopation, and the list goes on!

This year we will connect to the social studies concept "thinking like a global citizen" by learning dances from different cultures and by listening to music with a world beat. Students will dance to reggae beat, the music of west aftrica, latin rhythms, swing, and much more.  They will also have opportunities to create their own dances with friends from class.

In October, all dance students will learn Michael Jackson's famous dance entitled, Thriller.  Then in December and March, students will have the opportunity to perform at all school assemblies.
