 | Participation
There are many ways to earn participation points in Natural Resources and Conservation. We are all individuals and therefore have a variety of interests. I hope to provide several options for you to choose from, because we are diverse and don't all share the same interests. Listed below are some examples of how you could earn participation points in class. Please do not wait until the last minute. You are REQUIRED to complete a certain number of points in addition to the regular classwork that is entered in the gradebook as individual assignments. I simply want to respect you as an individual and give you some freedom of choice. Here are some examples: Attendance
An important job skill is to reliably come to work. That may seem insultingly obvious, but think of it this way, your future boss will not pay you for the days that you stay home sick, regardless of whether you have a note from home or not. Consider me your boss, and I will "pay" you 5 pts for each day that you are on time and present to class. I understand that you might occasionally be ill, or have an unavoidable family matter that keeps you home. You will be able to make up missed attendance points, so please be sure to keep track of your attendance and complete more participation activities.
Another reason for attendance points, is that we will have great discussions and activities that cannot really be turned into the box, so this is a way to reward you for participating, be it as a quiet observer, or an active contributor. Landscape, habitat, greenhouse and school "farm"
We have had several outdoor projects this year, some of which are coming together and looking great! I will "pay" you 1 point for every 5 minutes of good work. If a point were a dollar, that would be the equivilence of $12/hour... which is not bad. Some projects that we are currently working on are: -making raised beds for home grown herbs, fruits and veggies -sculpting the landscape near the top of the airport hallway and installing a rain garden -planting a fruit "orchard" -working in the greenhouse (weeding, transplanting seedlings and more) documentaries
I enjoy the occasional documentary, and sometimes there is no substitution to a beautifully crafted visual presentation. On the rare occasion that a video is shown in class, you can earn 5 points for taking notes that span the duration of the show. I don't want you to miss the film becaue you took too many notes, I just want to see that you were involved throughout.
-If you watch environment themed documentaries at home, take notes and you could earn points for that too. Communing with nature
Every time we experience nature, it effects us. I am an avid hiker and am always amazed by the beauty and wonder of the great outdoors. The more I get out into the wilderness (even a good city park) the more I want to help protect it.
---you are encouraged to go hiking, camping, canoeing, walking, mountain biking, birdwatching, beach combing, etc... safely and responsibly of course. You are welcome to earn points by reflecting on your outdoor experiences. I will expect about one page demonstrating your awareness and appreciation of your surroundings. Photos are a bonus! ---Were you concerned for the health of the natural area that you visited? How did you feel before, during and after the visit? Were there other people nearby? Were they responsible? Were you? did you enjoy the silence, the chatter of the wildlife or the wind in the trees? etc... Children's literature
Choose a target age, an appropriate topic and write an illustrated book helping to teach kids about making responsible choices for the planet and all of its inhabitants. MORE DETAIL for this activity coming soon. Volunteer
Volunteer in a variety of environmenal activities that help improve habitat and our communities. I will continue to post the activities that I hear about on the big yellow board, and possibly on this website too! Please include a photo if possible showing your involvement, a reflection page and the contact info of the group leader for verification. independent study
You may have a great idea for an activity. I cannot possibly think of everything, so let me know the details of an activity or project that you are excited to do and I will support you if I can. Points will be determined separately for each project. Optional enrichment worksheets
Sometimes we don't feel like slinging a shovel, or working in the greenhouse. There will be a number of additional enriching and fun assignments that you may choose from to earn points. Zookeeper
There are a variety of animals within our learning environment. You are welcome to participate in their care as long as it doesn't get in the way of your required class participation (assignment completion). I will start you out slow, and increase your responsibility as long as you show that you can handle it. Mentoring
The beauty of Natural Resources and Conservation is the wide range of learners all experiencing a class together. We undoubtedly all have different opinions, interests, and levels of experience with the environment and academia. You might be ABLE TO help with some topics, but also might NEED help with others. If you are interested in mentoring classmates, you can earn points for helping others to find success in NRC. A respectful and patient interaction is essential, because it is sometimes really difficult to admit when we need help. See me for more details. | |

WARNING!!! This class will be fun and full of hands on activities!!! Why should I care about the environment!?! This course is the answer to life, the universe and everything... o.k., that might be asking a bit much from a year long high school class, but it will help to shed light on the effect humankind has on the world. Students will also learn a variety of ways they can help to improve the environment, from simple actions such as turning off the water when brushing their teeth, to full on involvement in habitat restoration projects. The sky is the limit. In this course, we will focus on topics such as local and global environmental issues, water and the carbon cycle, human interactions with the environment, population studies and the effect of climate on ecosystems. Activities
Welcome to the Hudson's Bay aquarium
Do you like fish? How would you like to learn how to set up and maintain a freshwater aquarium? We will set up aquarium habitats, experiment with light, water quality, temperature, food types, aquatic plants, aquarium size, different fish species, and observe fish behavior. Who knows, if we replicate their natural habitats well enough, they may even reproduce! Home & Garden
have you ever said "I want to clean my house really well!" or "I want to do lots of yard work without killing salmon!" but don't know how to reach your goals? We will investigate how to clean our homes, or have a beautiful garden or yard without spewing so many nasty chemicals all over the place. this site is under construction....
Do you want to learn how to make houses out of straw, mud, bottles, dirt, tires and/or sticks? Would you like to learn how to heat water on your roof? what about baking cookies in a cardboard box? We will investigate alternative building methods and ways to live without being energy hogs! Bay's top chef
Ok, now that we have our beautiful garden full of fresh home grown fruits and veggies, what should we do with them? How about learning food preservation techniques, or better yet, learn how to cook delicious meals fresh from the garden? Oh, and of course, we must eat them! | |

 | This is my new favorite science website
This website shows through concept mapping how physics is connected to all sciences. It helps to add "AHA!" moments and enrich our understanding of how the world works. The index to the right of the page is a list of possible terms of interest. When you click on one, other related concepts are included. The bubbles are links, so click away! http://hyperphysics.phy-astr.gsu.edu/HBASE/hframe.html | |
