Two-hour late start provides time for Professional Learning Communities
Last year Vancouver Public Schools began a Professional Learning Community (PLC) in each school. A two-hour late start once a month provides time necessary for teachers to collaborate with one another to meet student needs and improve student learning.
Educators in the PLCs work together to assure that students are not just taught, but that they actually learn. Research shows that significant learning gains may be achieved if time is provided for educators to work together.
Four questions drive the work of educators in PLCs:
What do we expect students to learn?
How will we know when they have learned it?
How will we respond when they don’t learn?
How will we respond when they already know it?
According to many education experts, the development of Professional Learning Communities is the most promising strategy to help all students achieve high academic standards.
