Early Entrance Process – Spring 2009

The age requirement for children to start kindergarten in Vancouver Public Schools is five years of age by August 31 for the start of school in the upcoming fall. Often, parents believe their child is socially and academically ready to begin kindergarten early. Parents may apply to have their child tested for early entrance to kindergarten if the child meets the following qualifications. Additional requirements are detailed in district Regulation 5111.1.

Early Entrance Program qualifications
• Students must turn five years old on or before October 15, 2009. There are no exceptions to this qualification.
• Preschool is recommended but not required.

All students who apply for the Early Entrance program are assessed using the HOSTS Survey of Developmental Tasks. This screening tool assesses seven mental and physical processes, which include conceptual development, language development, auditory memory, auditory perception, visual memory, visual perception, and visual motor performance.

Application Process
Applications will be available at all elementary schools beginning April 7, 2009. Applications are due by May 22, 2009.

Parents will be contacted the first week of June to set up the screening date and time. Screening will take place June 22–25, 2009.

Parents will be notified by mail the second week of July as to whether or not their child qualified for early entrance. If a child qualifies for early entrance, placement in kindergarten will be dependent on space available at the school. Parents of qualified students will be contacted in mid to late August to let them know if there is space available in the building they have requested. If space is not available, an alternate school may be requested, however, parents must provide transportation to the school if it is outside their home boundary area.

The classroom teacher will review placement and progress closely for a period of 30 calendar days. If there are any concerns identified within that time period concerning the placement, they will be jointly discussed by the family, teacher and principal.

If you have any questions please contact Molly Mowrer at 313-1020.
