What is the Summer Literacy and Math Academy?
The Summer Literacy and Math Academy (SLMA) is a summer program that is designed to serve all current K – 5 students from Title Elementary Schools who are below grade level in mathematics. Students who are below grade level also are referred to as students in need of strategic and intensive intervention.
All elementary students who qualified to participate in the 2010 Summer Literacy and Math Academy should have received a Summer Literacy and Math Academy Registration Brochure from their teacher. The official deadline for registration is Friday, April 30, 2010. All parents/guardians can expect to receive confirmation letters by the end of the regular school year.
Additional information about SLMA
Breakfast and lunch will be provided free of charge daily at each of the SLMA sites.

How?
Limited transportation will be provided to each of the SLMA locations for all students who reside in VSD boundaries. Exact pick up times and locations were communicated in the official acceptance letter. Bus route information is posted below.
Teacher Assignment
All students will benefit from working with specially trained VSD teachers. Students will work with one teacher for the duration of the 4- week program.
Curriculum
Depending on age and level, students will be working the following materials:
All students will be building background knowledge for the grade level they will be in during the next school year. A specifically designed instructional day will include the following components:

• National Geographic Leveled Readers
• Chapter One & Two Math Central concepts for the upcoming year
• Problem Solving
• Read - Aloud
• Fast Math
• Do the Math
General Skills to be Gained
Summer Literacy and Math Academy provides personalized attention to each student’s ability to develop a deeper sense of numbers and mathematical concepts. The “building blocks,” or skills and knowledge necessary for this could include any of the following: Number Sense: the awareness of what numbers represent, their relationships to each other, and their use within a real world context Problem Solving:theability to reason logically and communicate understanding Probability/Statistics:the ability to gather, record, and interpret information (data) Measurement:the ability to understand and apply standard and non-standard forms of measurement
Parent Showcase Day
Students at each grade level will be expected to create a portfolio project during the SLMA experience. Parents will be invited for an end-of-SLMA celebration on August 4, where students will be expected to present and share their project.
