Transitional First Grade Program
for the 2010-11 school year
Transitional First Grade (T-1) is a literacy-focused, full-day program that is a bridge between kindergarten and first grade. Now in its eighth year, T-1 gives students an excellent start in school. It is offered at Sacajawea, Hough, and Eleanor Roosevelt elementary schools.
Children who might qualify for T-1:
• have completed an accredited private kindergarten program but do not meet the age requirement for first grade (six years of age on or before August 31);
• will turn six by Dec. 31, 2010;
• have completed kindergarten in Vancouver Public Schools, but are not quite ready developmentally for first grade;
• meet the age requirement for first grade, but have never had formal schooling.
Application Process
Applications for the 2010-11 school year will be available at all elementary schools April 6 through May 21. If there are more than 22 applicants per school site, students will be selected through a lottery process.
Students residing within the school boundaries for which they are applying will be placed in the first lottery drawing. The second lottery drawing will be for families outside of the school boundary, but within Vancouver Public Schools’ boundaries. The third lottery will be for families outside Vancouver Public Schools’ boundaries. The lottery drawing for all three school sites will be held at the Bates Center for Educational Leadership (next door to Roosevelt Elementary School, 2921 Falk Road) on May 26 at 4 p.m. All applicants will be notified of the lottery outcome.
Parents of students outside of school boundaries who are selected for this program will be required to provide their own transportation to and from school.
