Vancouver School District's GEAR UP Rocket “College: My dream, My plan!”
Career exploration at Providence Hospital this summer was a hands-on experience.
“GEAR UP” stands for Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Under-graduate Programming. “Rocket” stands for Ride on to College: Kids’ Education Ticket.
November Update!
It's half past November, and we're rolling quickly into the Holiday Season! Thanksgiving is next week.
In November, we took a small group of students who are studying Spanish to the Miracle Theatre for the show "Day of the Dead". It was a great hit again.
On Friday, November 13, 42 students were invited to interview 40 members from our community, and ask them about their job or career, and how they got to where they are today at a Career Exploration Dinner. Among notable guests were WA State Senator Craig Pridemore, Clark County Sheriff Garry Lucas, outgoing VSD School Board President Dr. Ed Rankin, Univision Reporter Delia Hernandez, Clark College President Bob Knight, the Honorable Darvin Zimmerman, Judge in the Clark County Court, and our own School District Associate Superintendant Christine Burgess. We had wonderful representation from a variety of occupations including finance, insurance, teaching, social services, merchant marine, hair dresser, engineering, dental, orthopedics, and more!!! To say the program was a success is an understatement!
A big Thank You to everyone who participated from the GEAR UP Team and especially from the enthused GEAR UP students who took advantage of this great opportunity.
Our Thanksgiving break is Nov. 25 - 27.
Things should be a little quieter in December, but will really pick up again in January! There are many exciting activities and events planned and being planned. We don't want to leave anyone behind!
