Dr. Steven T. Webb became superintendent of Vancouver Public Schools in July 2008. He joined the district as deputy superintendent in 2006.
A native of Washington State, Webb grew up in Tacoma and graduated from Bethel High School. He earned an educational doctorate from Seattle University, a master of arts in teaching from Lewis and Clark College, and a bachelor of arts in politics and government from the University of Puget Sound.
Webb, age 47, has been a teacher and administrator for public school districts in Washington and California. In 2006 he left his position as superintendent of Apple Valley Unified School District in California (a district of 15,000 preK-12 students) to take the job with Vancouver Public Schools. Previously, Webb served as deputy superintendent at Lake Stevens School District in Washington. He also was assistant superintendent for secondary learning and technology and principal of Lake Stevens Middle School. Webb was an assistant principal at Gig Harbor High School and Key Peninsula Middle School in the Peninsula School District, and he was an assistant principal at Port Townsend High School. He taught social studies and English at both Camas High School and Sedro Woolley High School.
Webb has been an adjunct professor for City University, teaching in the Educational Leadership and Principal Certification program. As an assessment and school improvement planning (SIP) specialist, he has provided staff training for several school districts in Washington State. Webb also consults with the Education Research and Development Institute.
In Washington and throughout the nation, Webb has moved into a leadership role in education. He is an active member of the Urban Superintendents Association of America and the Western States Benchmarking Consortium. He has served in leadership and advisory roles for the Washington State Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction and professional organizations. He has been a presenter at state, regional and national conferences and is a published author in professional journals.
Webb remains grounded through his family, the local community, and Vancouver Public Schools. Webb’s wife, Lisa, is a speech language pathologist for Battle Ground Public Schools. They have two children—Tess, who begins second grade this year, and younger brother Levi, who will begin public school in 2012.
Webb is actively involved in the community through civic organizations and his church. He serves on the boards for the Rotary Foundation, Boys and Girls Clubs of Southwest Washington, Vancouver School District Foundation, Washington State University Vancouver Advisory Council, and has previously served on The Columbian Readers’ Advisory Council, and the boards of Columbia Springs Environmental Education Center and Share.
In Vancouver Schools, he is a hands-on leader who visits the district’s 37 school sites and periodically works the various jobs of his 3,300 employees. This is his unique way of building relationships for results—connecting people, purpose and passion through transformative leadership practices.
