Inside and out, it’s the sense of community that makes Hazel Dell Elementary stand apart. Inside: The Hazel Dell community nurtures its students. For nearly 20 years, volunteers have organized the annual “Enrichment Fair,” providing students a day of fun and practical workshops. The Lunch Buddy program provides mentors who meet for lunch and conversation with our students. A Head Start classroom also is located in the school to serve neighborhood preschoolers.
Outside: The Hazel Dell Community Garden, made possible thanks to several partners, teaches students how to nurture and grow plants and, in the process, create a healthy community. An outdoor classroom, the garden supports the science curriculum. After the school day is over, nearly 200 students walk across the campus to the Boys and Girls Club where they participate in structured activities and get homework help.
Our school honors community traditions. Our students regularly participate in the Hazel Dell Parade. At the end of the school year, fifth-graders ring the Hazel Dell bell—a tradition since the school was founded 125 years ago.
