At Felida Elementary School, students don’t have to read—they want to! Many of our students choose the popular lunchtime “Battle of the Books” game over recess. The Jeopardy-style competition encourages students to read outside of school. The Book Room provides books and materials for readers who need extra help or an extra challenge. The Accelerated Reader program uses computerized comprehension tests to determine each student’s reading level. Students earn incentive points for every test they take as they move up in reading levels.
Learning doesn’t end with the school day. The YMCA runs an after-school program offering classes including Spanish, chess, sign language, and science. Felida also offers extended-day WASL prep classes.
Evening events draw hundreds of families into the school. Every year, Felida participates in No TV Week. Instead of watching TV, students, families and staff spend time together enjoying literacy activities at the school.
