The diverse, energetic students of Martin Luther King Elementary School benefit from many academic and extracurricular opportunities. In 2008 King was recognized by the state for improvement in reading scores. The State Title I Improvement Award included $3,500 to support academic programs. King is a site of the Reading First program, which pays for a school reading coach and instructional materials.
The beat of the One-of-a-Kind Drumline booms through King Elementary School. Students must earn the privilege to play in the after-school drumline, which performs throughout Vancouver and Portland. Additional safe and structured after-school programs include on-site childcare and the option to join Boys and Girls Club at the Jim Parsley Community Center.
More than 100 volunteers give their time to the students and staff at King. The Dynamic Young Men, a group of boys from Fort Vancouver High School, mentor several King students and serve as a positive presence on the playground each Friday. Volunteers also include lunch buddies, math buddies and reading buddies.
“M. L. King is a wonderful place, and diversity is a strength of our school.”
