Harney Elementary School is an environment buzzing with activity. A Spanish Immersion program started in 2008-09 with two classes of kindergarten students. By the end of the year, the students were having entire conversations in Spanish. Our parents are thrilled with the childrens' progress. The program expands in 2009-10 to include first graders. Each year a grade level will be added as the current students advance through school.
Challenging academics and nurturing partnerships provide an education for the whole child. Clark College students help at our lunchtime homework club. Our students learn library skills and work in the media center through the Stingers program. Student Council offers leadership opportunities. Fifth-graders can look to the future in the College is Possible program offered by Clark College. Fourth- and fifth-grade students can participate in the Hornet Marimba Band. The band practices after school and performs for fellow students and the community. Our monthly Pride Assembly recognizes students who show exemplary character traits.
There are more than 75 volunteers at Harney. Parents organize fun activities such as Bingo Night and the “Harney Carney” Carnival, which draws as many as 700 families each year.
