Apprenticeship programs offer college-level education, a salary and medical benefits at the same time, while the apprentice learns a skilled trade from journey-level craftspersons on job sites. Other than buying tools and work clothes, usually apprentices do not have to pay for their training.
You must apply to be considered for admission to an apprenticeship. These qualities enhance a person's chances to be admitted to an apprenticeship: strong academic record including at least a high school diploma or GED, excellent attendance at school and/or employment, previous employment (especially that's related to the type of work the apprenticeship trains for), supportive letters of recommendation, a "clean" legal record, and a "clean" substance abuse record.
